In this lecture, Professor Chen mainly shared the research project "23-year follow-up study on the development of children's temperament", jointly researched by the Institute of Developmental Psychology, Beijing Normal University, and Professor Chen Xinyin from the Department of Psychology, University of Western Ontario, Canada. The project applied a laboratory observation method combining questionnaires and videos. From 1995 to the present, a follow-up survey of 208 2-year-old children in Beijing for 23 years to explore the relationship between children's temperament and social behavior stability and variability. The important dimensions in the personality structure and the role of genetics and environment in the future development of children have formed many very realistic research results.
After 25 years of follow-up and comparative study, Professor Chen Huichang and his team found that children's "self-control" and "initiative" two seeds, and "emotional intelligence" are the three most important seeds that affect a person's life. The self-control ability of children at the age of 2 can significantly predict the language and mathematics achievement in the fifth grade of elementary school. The intrinsic interest in toys at the age of 4 and 7 can significantly predict the divergent thinking score and the flexibility of classroom learning during primary school. Although the "self-control" and "initiative" have a strong continuity, there is still room for improvement through the cultivation. The family environment and genetics explain 50% of children's future development, while others are explained by social factors such as education. Genetics can affect 20-30% of IQ, and family behavior and social education play an important role in children's future development.
In addition, 65% of people's temperament (character, mood, etc.) is completely stable, and 25% will undergo major reversal. Whether a person's personality is extroverted, whether it is easy to be offensive, whether it is easy to agree with others' opinions, whether he can become a good team member, etc., has significant representational characteristics in early childhood. At the end of the lecture, Professor Chen shared the methods of cultivating infants' self-control and initiative, and everyone benefited a lot.
